SENGA Hill DISTRICT

Location

Senga Hill District was established on 3rd June 2016 under statutory instrument No. 39 of 2016. The Administrative Centre is located in Mambwe Mission approximately 8KMs from Chimula off Nakonde Road. Before its establishment the district was under Mbala District.

Senga Hill is located between 30o 53’ – 32o 15’ East of the prime meridian and the latitude of between 8o 23’ – 9o 39’ South of the equator. The total land area of the District stands at 5,338.35 Square Kilometres (533,834.71 ha). The District Administrative Centre is 1067KMs from Lusaka the capital city of Zambia and 201 KMs from Kasama the provincial capital of Northern Province

Senga Hill district shares boundaries with Mbala in the North, Nakonde in the East, Mungwi to the South, Kasama in the South, Lunte in the Southwest and Mpulungu in the Northwest and shares International boundary with the Republic of Tanzania in the north east of the district.

Governance System

Senga Hill District has one constituency namely Senga Hill, Ten (10) wards and three (3) Chiefs.

 Climate and Soils

The area is mostly covered by the Southern tropics sphere with an average height of 1500m above sea level. The plateau climate is almost Mediterranean in nature. The area receives an annual rainfall of approximately 1,240mm. The rain season normally lasts from November – April. The district has huge tracks of undeveloped land with potential for farm block development.

According to 2010 census of population and housing, Senga district has a population of

92,391 with an annual growth rate of 3.1.

Socio Economic Infrastructure

Electricity: The district is not connected to the nation electricity grid

Hospital: The district has a mini hospital with fully fledged equipment.

Education: The district has 6 Secondary Schools and 59 Primary School.

Water Supply: Senga hill district is not connected to piped water system but depends on boreholes and open wells

Communication: Senga hill district is connected to all the three mobile service providers namely MTN, Airtel and Zamtel.
